New Year - new activities

Good day to you all and Happy New Year!

I hope you had an enjoyable and healthy Christmas break and have entered the very soggy start to the new year in good spirits?

The Community Council have met for the first time this year and, as well as approving a number of grants, including supporting the purchase of Defibrillator boxes for Groesfaen and Talygarn, during our meeting we also approved the budgets and spending plans for the year ahead. Details are available on the Council website. The plans provide good scope for making some essential improvements to facilities and services in the area, and we are pleased to announce that we are planning extra village-wide events this year to further enhance the community spirit and visitors to Pontyclun always garnered by our usual flagship events, Picnic in the Park and the Christmas Fayre.

As previously promised, the Community Council isn’t only interested in the high street and takes great consideration of people living across the ward. As such, funds have also been allocated for each of the three wards, Pontyclun West, Central and East, for specific projects, maintenance and spending.

Economy Working Group

In November, all local businesses that we have contact details for were invited to the first Economy Working Group under the new council and there were a dozen in attendance. We discussed topics including the calendar of events, thoughts around parking, communication and some general all-village marketing ideas. Whilst the group is mostly focused on events surrounding Pontyclun High St. (agreed as running from The Ivor to The Palm Tree), meetings are always open and anyone is welcome – business owner or not. One key agreement was to set up a Whatsapp group for the businesses to collaborate, ask each other questions and create joined-up ideas on main event days. This is already active and proving useful.

Minutes are available on the Council website and if you want to be a part of future meetings or have a business on the High Street and want to be part of the Whatsapp group, please contact me on paulbinning@pontyclun-cc.gov.wales / 07790150930.

Café 50 – help needed!

One of many worthwhile causes who visit Café 50, a Dementia Support group meets each week but they’re short of volunteers and had to unfortunately cancel this week’s event. They meet each Monday, 1:30-3:30, so if you think you might be able to help, please call Café 50 on 01443 238500.

Also, teachers at Pontyclun Primary are looking for any relevant old photos to help put together a celebration of 100 years of the school being open. If you once attended, or know someone who did and have photos, please also call the number above.

Community Wardens:

Last summer RCT announced funding for additional Community Wardens across the borough, and the pair allocated to Pontyclun and area have been spotted numerous times since the start of December. They’ll always be wearing official Council hi-visibility vest tops and are in place to help local residents with minor incidents and questions and crack down on anti-social behaviour.

Area Events diary:

Llantrisant Folk Club meets every Wednesday at 8.30pm at Pontyclun Athletic Club. About twice a month they have a guest artist (£8 on the door), all other Wednesdays (£3 entry) are Song & Music Nights, where those present may contribute a song, tune or a spoken word piece.

Upcoming events include:

1 February: Song & Music Night with a Showcase from John Mosedale.

15 February: Jocelyn Pettit & Ellen Gira, a dynamic fiddle and cello duo from the USA.

PCC future dates for the diary!

Picnic in the Park: 10th June
